What is Chiropractic?

This is a broad question but we will attempt to make it easily understandable.  It is a treatment, a profession, and a medical approach or philosophy.

The Treatment:

A Chiropractic treatment is commonly called an “adjustment”.  Chiropractic Doctors are trained to find and reduce the fixation or the hindered movement between spinal joints. A very specific force in a precise direction is applied to a joint. It unlocks the fixed or improperly moving joint. Although there is sometimes a clicking sound associated with this procedure it is not always present. Terms such as “cracking your back” are misleading as no cracking is taking place. The sound is harmless and many times inconsequential to the desired therapeutic effect. What is important is the restored proper movement of the joint! There are many ways to adjust the spine. Usually, the doctor’s hands or a specially designed instrument delivers a brief and highly-accurate thrust. Some adjustment methods are quick and some require a slow and constant pressure. It does not hurt! The benefits of proper spinal movement are numerous. Between every joint or segment of your spine, vital nerves exit from the spinal cord. These nerves pass through the joints and then continue to most every muscle and organ in your body.  Freeing the joints to move properly can alleviate pain and improve function.

After years of training and clinical experience, each Chiropractic Doctor becomes highly skilled in the delivery of a variety of adjusting approaches. Chiropractors in the state of Virginia are licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine.

The Profession:

Chiropractors in Virginia are licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine. Every Chiropractor has to graduate from an accredited Doctoral Program which includes nearly 4,500 college classroom hours in health sciences. They must complete an Intern program.  A Chiropractor must pass a series of National Board Examinations.  Just like your family physician they must keep their license current by attaining continuing education every year.  Chiropractors are doctors and can diagnosis a patient’s problem. Unlike a physical therapist, they do not require a prescription from your regular physician. Chiropractors specialize in musculoskeletal problems, or problems with your muscles, bones, or joints. They are best known for the treatment of spinal problems.  Your Chiropractic doctor will perform an examination in order to diagnose any problem you are having. He or she may order X-rays or lab tests. A problem focused therapy plan will most likely be part of your treatment. Although a Chiropractor may suggest joint manipulation as part of your treatment it is not always included. Joint manipulation is just one of the many treatment options available to today’s Chiropractor. Therapy plans may include physical therapies such as Ultrasound or TENS. It may include exercise or stretching. Your Chiropractor may even suggest you see a different specialist if he or she feels it is the best course of action. The Chiropractic Profession is now an accepted member of the healthcare community. Chiropractic is a tested and viable treatment option for many patients suffering with spinal or musculoskeletal pain. Chiropractic is covered by most insurance plans.

Chiropractic Philosophy:

The Chiropractic approach to healing is simple.  Your body does the healing. Given all the proper conditions your nervous system will “tell” your body’s injured muscles and joints to heal. Just like they have your whole life.  Removing any interference between your brain, your spinal cord, and the affected body part helps this process be unencumbered. Any nerve that is not “pinched” at the spine will relay the proper impulses from your brain. Your body does this millions of times a second your whole life without you being conscious of it. Chiropractic seeks to keep the flow of information moving.
